Obio AS was founded in December 2022. In connetction with the sale of all the shares in Oplandske Bioenergi to the Solør group, the pyrolysis business was transferred to Obio. Obio AS is owned 60 % by the district heating company Eidsiva Bioenergi and 40 % owned by the forest owners cooperative Glommen Mjøsen Skog. Current owners were also the largest owners in Oplandske Bioenergi, whitch started the biochar development.
Oplandske Bioenergi was founded in 2006. It was farmers and forest owners in Innlandet who got together and founded the company. The founders onboarded Glommen Mjøsen Skog and Eidsiva Bioenergi at a early stage. This ownership constellation was stable until the sale of Oplandske Bioenergi. In 2008, the first bioenergy plant was commissioned. There was a stable growth with expanding the business with new boilers at new sites and expanding distribution of heat to new customers at the different sites.
In 2015, lower growth in the district heating marked was expected, and the board of Oplandske decided to investigate possible production of biochar. In the first years we imported some biochar, and we developed application for the Norwegian market. In 2020, the construction of our own pyrolysis plant started. The plant at Rudshøgda started production 24/7 in January 2021, as the first commercial biocharplant in Norway.
The company has three full time employees. In addition, there is a close collaboration with Eidsiva Bioenergi. Eidsiva personnel are on call at night and during weekends, if there is an issue with the fully automated factory.
